A concrete service for Cincinnati that puts the spec on the price

Who we are, how a job is organised, and the things we've chosen not to do.

Ready-mix concrete truck with its chute extended pouring into wood forms for a driveway while two workers spread the wet concrete

Buckeye Concrete Co. arranges residential and small commercial concrete work across Cincinnati and the inner suburbs: West Chester, Mason, Fairfield, Hamilton, Lebanon, Blue Ash, Anderson Township, Colerain Township and Milford. The work is done by independent local crews who pour flatwork for a living, carry general liability and workers' compensation insurance, and, for anything in the City of Cincinnati's right-of-way, hold the Department of Transportation and Engineering's street-contractor licence that the City requires.

How a job is organised

You call or send the form; someone rings back the same day. An estimator comes to the property, measures the job, looks at the slope and the drainage, asks what's going on the slab and whether there's a City notice. The written price that follows names the thickness, the base, the reinforcement, the mix, the finish, the joint plan, removal and haul-off, and the apron or sidewalk under its permit as a separate line. You compare it with whatever else you've got, and if you go ahead, the permit is pulled, Ohio811 marks the utilities, the crew pours, finishes, joints and cures, and you get the warranty terms in writing and copies of the permit records.

Things we've chosen not to do

  • No foundations or structural work. We pour slabs, walks, steps and walls. A house foundation, a basement wall or a tall retaining wall on a sliding hillside is engineered work, and we say so and point you to an engineer.
  • No verbal prices. A range on the phone, a written price after the measure. Nobody pours on a handshake.
  • No invented credentials. Ohio doesn't license concrete contractors at the state level, so there's no licence number to show you. What exists is the City's street-contractor licence for right-of-way work, the permits, the insurance certificate and the written contract, and we show all of those.
  • No skipped apron. The strip at the curb is built to the City's 7-inch spec under the permit, every time, as a line you can see.
  • No salt the first winter. We'll tell you that at the pour and again on the invoice, because it's the thing that decides how long the driveway lasts.

Why Cincinnati

Because the city asks a lot of its concrete. Hills that turn every driveway into a drainage job. A century-old sidewalk network that the code puts on the owner. Winters that freeze and thaw a dozen times and a salt truck on every street. A right-of-way rule set that most contractors would rather not mention. All of that rewards doing the job to a spec and writing the spec down, and that's the business.
