Concrete work in Mason: patios, pool decks and the driveways of the 2000s

Mason is Warren County's big suburb, built out mostly since the 1990s on larger lots with pools and outdoor living. The concrete work here is more patio than repair, and the driveways are just reaching the age where they need attention.

Mason sits north of the Hamilton County line in Warren County, grown from a small town into a city of subdivisions in a generation. The houses are newer than Cincinnati's, the lots are bigger, and a lot of them have pools, which means pool decks, patios and the walks between them are the bulk of what we pour here. A stamped patio with a border, a broom-finish pool surround with a slip-resistant texture, a walk to the fire pit at the back of the lot: Mason work is outdoor-living work.

The driveways are a step behind West Chester's: poured in the 2000s, they're at fifteen to twenty-five years, and the first replacements are starting. The same rules apply, a base that drains, air in the mix, joints cut right, and an apron done to the City of Mason's requirements. The older part of town around the original downtown has a few older driveways and walks, and the usual sidewalk and step work that comes with age.

Mason is a city with its own building and engineering departments, so permits for slabs and walls and the rules for driveway approaches are the City's. The Maineville and Deerfield Township edges fall under Warren County. We check which office before pricing.

Asked in Mason

What finish is best for a pool deck?

Broom or a knock-down texture, never smooth, with a sealer that includes a grit additive. Light colors stay cooler underfoot.

Can a stamped patio be poured around an existing pool?

Yes, with an isolation joint at the coping and the pitch set away from the water. Access for the truck is the thing to plan.

Does Mason require a permit for a driveway?

The apron at the street is the City's right-of-way and follows the City's rules; a slab on your lot usually needs no building permit unless it carries a structure. We confirm with the City.

How far in advance should I book a patio?

In season, a few weeks. Spring fills fastest; late summer and fall often have shorter waits.
