A slab price starts with area times a rate for the thickness and goes up with reinforcement, a footing where one is needed, removal of what's there and how hard it is to get concrete to the spot. The published figures below cover the common cases.
About the numbers. The ranges on this page are published national figures from HomeGuide, quoted with each page's date because they change. They are not our prices. Our price for your job is written after an estimator measures it, and it lists thickness, base, reinforcement, finish and the apron separately.

What adds to it
- Reinforcement. Fiber in the mix is the cheapest; wire mesh on chairs next; a rebar grid for a slab that carries a lift or machinery.
- A footing or thickened edge. Required where walls will bear on the slab, dug to the 30-inch frost line. This is the difference between a shed pad and a garage foundation.
- Removal. An old garage floor has to be cut free of the walls and broken out.
- Access. A basement floor or a backyard slab with no truck access means a pump or wheelbarrows.
- Vapor barrier and insulation. Under interior floors, and under any slab that will be a finished space.
- Permit. A slab that carries a structure usually needs a building permit; the fee is passed through.
How much concrete that is
A 4-inch slab takes a cubic yard of concrete for every 81 square feet; a 6-inch slab, one for every 54. A 20-by-24 garage floor at 4 inches is about 6 yards. The yardage calculator does the arithmetic for any size.
Questions
What's the minimum slab you'll pour?
An AC pad or a generator pad. Small jobs carry a minimum because the truck and the crew cost the same to show up; we'll say what it is on the phone.
Is a 6-inch slab worth it?
For a workshop with a lift, a slab that trucks drive on, or heavy equipment, yes. For a shed or a car garage, 4 inches reinforced is standard.
Does the price include the permit?
Where a slab needs one, the fee is a line on the price and we make the application.
Can you pour a shed pad the same day you quote it?
No; Ohio811 marks come first, two business days before a dig, and the mix is ordered against the job.
How thick is a garage floor?
Four inches for cars, five for trucks and trailers, six with rebar for a lift, plus a thickened edge under the walls.
What about a basement floor?
Priced by the area with access as the big variable; pump or wheelbarrow, vapor barrier under it, pitched to the drain.
